Playmobil City Life 5605 PopStars! Band

If you have had the misfortune of going with me on a toy run, you know that I like to go to lots of stores, go through them quickly, and will buy nearly any Playmobil boxed set once the average price per figure in the set drops below $1.90 each - that's my magic number. I found a 5605 PopStars! Band at a Toys R Us last August as part of a ridiculous clearance run, and at $1.90 for the set of three it more than met my standards. With bright colors and haircuts straddling the modern era and the true outrages of Jem, this set is the perfect fit for those looking to put their own spin on the Eurovision Song Contest, or just want some figures of "the young people" to remind you that you, too, are dying. I didn't give it that much thought - I just got a cart and grabbed the lot of the 80%-90% off sets and went on my merry way, realizing later that these sets could have great value with one of the best toys ever made.

As always, each figure is about 3-inches tall. A black man with frizzy hair, an awesome jacket, and a cool t-shirt stands out as being both the snazziest dresser and also possibly a little discomforting with very bright teeth and visible whites on his eyes which may recall other toys that were formerly popular in Europe but are no longer in vogue. The hair piece is really cool, and should go a long way to helping you make your own Playmobil incarnation of the MC5 or 1970s versions of The Magic Band. A guitar easily straps around his (or any other) body, and the accessories - like all Playmobil accessories - just work. A white blonde kid with long, Bieber-esque hair and a stupid shirt is joined by a colorful young white lady with a semi-loose skirt which shifts up when she sits. The body design is quite different from other lady body bucks you've (OK, I've) bought over the years, and she holds together nicely. If you squint, she could probably also make a decent Kate Pierson ca. "Party Mix" or "Wild Planet," minus the color and the shirt. It's getting there- it's a striking figure.

Playmobil City Life 5605 PopStars! Band

My set included a couple of extra parts - a fourth microphone (the box says it has three) and an extra microphone clip were included for some reason. The guitar stands are unnecessary, but nice bonus pieces - if you just want to display them, you may. The first thing I thought when I saw the extra mic was "Where's my Hobo?" He's pretending he's Captain Beefheart now. He wishes he had a pair of bongos.

Playmobil City Life 5605 PopStars! BandThe two-piece guitars are sturdy and assemble in seconds. They fit in the stands nicely, or the figures can hold them with a semi-hidden grip on the flip side.

I'm assuming this line was more or less meant in Europe as a sort of Eurovision Song Contest toy starter kit, as the figures in and of themselves aren't particularly amazing. They're neat, but they become better when you swap around parts. A black guy with an afro, while uncommon, doesn't seem all that interesting. But a white dude in an afro? OK, that screams cool 1970s rocker guy. Similarly the black guy in the blond hair piece seems way more interesting and dare I say slightly edgy, and I'm sure if you swap parts around with other figures you've bought you'll get something really interesting. I'm sure I will some day manage to assemble a decent Donald "Duck" Dunn or a Rollins or, if Santa gets my letters, my very own toy Stiv Bators.

At $7, this is a pretty good set. At $2, it's a steal - you should buy more just to strip them for parts if you think you might ever customize figures to look like 1970s rock bands, and you should. There's a whole line based on rock bands with things like keyboards, tour buses, amps, and a whole stage which seems like the perfect thing to get to strip for parts. Assuming, of course, you can replace the iffy hairstyles of those figures. I have no valid reason to own this set, but I do find it charming and I believe I'll mostly just be using it for parts.
