Playmobil loves its folklore - and off-brand monsters! This 2019 Witch brings something that's culturally significant all over the world and doesn't do anything particularly out-there with it. Most of the witch figures have been given round eyes and white person skin - it'd be cool to see other races, but the lack of green is surprising after all these years. But don't get me wrong - this witch is pretty neat.

The face is pretty much the same as one from a few years ago in the blind bags. That one had a black dress with orange and a spider web on it. The face had a mole, a weird toothy smile, and these odd eyes with black heavy eyebrows painted above brown dot eyes with tiny white dots in them - this is unusual. Most Playmobil figures just have brown dots for eyes. She has hair that hangs and is a little messy, with a tiny bun in the back.

Her dress uses existing pieces with a new paint job and is one of very few witch figures with short, puffy sleeves. The purple dress has green trim, which seems odd but fits right in the equally confusing purple and green Scooby-Doo Mystery Mansion. I don't know who picks the color schemes, but they work. She has a spider necklace, a laced-up top, and mushrooms hanging out of a pocket. THere are also patches and hints of wear and tear painted at the bottom of her legs. The feet are largely featureless, so no laces, but also no high heels. Good for her. If you can conjure magic, you should be able to get sensible shoes too.

Other than her hat, her only accessory of note is a brown broom. This isn't particularly unique, but most witch figures have had another accessory or a yellow broom - so this is a nice change of pace.

Because this is a Playmobil toy figure, it's good. There are a few women figures without articulated hips, but almost every figure ever made has jointed legs, shoulders, wrists, hips, and a neck. This means the figures from 1974 can use accessories and vehicles from 2021, with very few exceptions. If you want to put this witch on an old wagon, you can do that. If you want to put the pointy hat on an old astronaut, you can do that. This sort of thing is exceptionally rare in the toy business outside of LEGO and Hot Wheels, which is one of the reasons I get excited about new, licensed toys in this line. You may not get a 200-piece Back to the Future line, but if you want to send Doc and Marty back to medieval times you can just put the car in the castle and call it a day.

Playmobil blind bags have a witch every couple of series, so you may have one or several already - some are just normal looking women, others have big noses or gnarly teeth like this one. I like the subtle features on the dress like the patches and mushrooms. Nearly every series of these things has a princess and/or fairy and, frequently, a witch so long-time collectors have a whole coven already. I got this one because a dollar store started getting cases of figures and I wanted to get something fun - and got these. She is not amazing, and the face is a little out of style with the rest of the line, but it's good enough to hang on to and I hope I get some decent witch hut playset to go with her some day. Until then, she'll hang out with the monsters and ghosts.
