Playmobil Dino 5232 StegosaurusI saw the Stegosaurus set show up late in 2012 along with the rest of the line, and I was really excited to get them - and then I saw the price tags, which were a lot higher than other similarly sized sets involving dinosaurs in the past. These ones had fewer parts, few or no people, and less interactive environments - so I didn't bother to get it until roughly late September, when I had expiring store credit and had to get something. I originally planned on getting the dimetrodon but miscalculated how much I had to blow. It's not a bad set, but the contents of the box feel like they should be $5-$10 cheaper, or if they threw in a single figure I'd have felt I got my money's worth. It's a great set - it's just more expensive and less exciting than the last batch of these guys.

The large, roughly 9-inch long adult stegosaurus is this set's selling point. You would probably be fine shelling out $10-$16 just for him, as it's a fairly nice and durable creature. is spikes and plates are mostly made out of a rubbery plastic, save for 3 on the front of the body - these are darker, and are of a more rigid material. I can't imagine why - it doesn't look very good and I don't know how the two plastics will age side-by-side, particularly as discoloration will go. (Obviously, nobody but me is concerned about this on a toy for preschoolers.) The creature's eyes are bright green, with some cream highlights on his underbelly and feet. There are spots painted on his sides, making this a more intricately decorated creation than the lines sold in/around 2004 and 2006/2007. Clearly Playmobil set out to make a more impressive creature, and charge for it accordingly.

Articulation is as you might expect - the legs can move, and have soft plastic padding on each foot. The head can go up and down easily, so he can fight or feed or try to shove his babies out of the egg. Or her babies, what do I know? Either way, the toy is well-designed and feels like it should handle a fair amount of abuse should you so choose.

The figure is joined by a small menagerie of tiny creatures, including non-poseable hatchling stegosaurus triplets. They're cute, sure, but what can you do with them? Well, you can put them in their hinged eggs, hatch, and repeat. I think it's a nice feature, and the eggs seem durable, but "hatching" isn't exactly a fun thing to do and redo. After a while it's just creepy. How un-born can you be?

A very colorful caiman redeco gives you a croc-like creature with an opening jaw. It's really neat - heck, it probably drove up the cost of the set. He's joined by some smaller, painted lizards with no articulation. Many of these appeared in the 2007 mix of dinosaurs, but it seems their lot is to get lost. I understand the need to add parts to add "value," but they're pretty easily ignored.

Playmobil Dino 5232 StegosaurusMost of the dinosaur sets come with some sort of environment, and this one is no exception. A small, green hill has a hiding place for the smaller lizards and four plant life forms. They're quite colorful, and the clear blue bits are quite nice if you're in to collecting toy plastic plant life. I am not - so for me, it's filler, and not very exciting filler. A dinosaur play set would be better served with a place for the big dinosaur to inhabit or interact - much like the Spinosaurus set from a few years ago, this area exists mostly to store eggs. I have a fridge that does that. It's pretty, sure, and you can stick a dragonfly on it - but is it fun? I don't believe it is.

I find that price can make a big difference in how I perceive a set - cheaper is usually better, and things like figures make a huge difference in how I see value. I would say this set is ideal for kids invested in the Playmobil line, or for collectors. It's very likable, well-made, and cute - but ultimately you just want the dinosaurs, and Imaginext offers larger, more feature-laden action toys at a much lower price. I would say Playmobil wins hands-down in terms of what would look better on a shelf, but the Dino-Riders-inspired competitors from Fisher-Price are tough to beat these days. As such, I'd suggest you go in that direction unless you expect kicking and screaming from the collector/kid recipient.
