Four Horsemen Power Lords Ggripptogg Action FigureAfter the first year of Power Lords I've wound up with 5 different "pre-paints" of the Ggripptogg mold, plus the orange and blue flavors for 8 total. And here's the kicker - this red version actually had more changes that surprised me. Which is to say, any. The Four Horsemen gave us an all-new head, all-new forearms, and the variant skirt/loincloth piece we first saw debut on the Barlowe Concept Ggripptogg back in February.

There are three big changes over previous figures to address - if you got the Ggrapptikk Grunts or other members of his species, you basically know what to expect here. The forearms are notable because they were more or less completely redone to better mimic the original Revell toy, which had one spike on each elbow plus the arms were rotated slightly to give them a look that was more like salad tongs - each set of hands could, essentially, "g.shtml" things. The new toy doesn't have that range of motion, but the skin and veins and hands were all assembled to look more like the original toy. Previous figures were designed to have their hands with the palms facing the body - it's a subtle difference, but it does change the figure's personality significantly. As with before, each set of hands has 1 g.shtmling and 1 non-g.shtmling paw, so he can still hold his weapons.

For those of you who were fond of the forearms from previous releases, they were included with the Ggrapptikk Soldier (blue) club-exclusive figure, which was signed for club members. That figure also includes an alternate head for the red Ggripptogg.

Four Horsemen Power Lords Ggripptogg Action FigureThe head is the next major change - at first glance, it looks like the head used for the Barlowe Ggripptogg. A second face is sculpted on the back, with huge black eyes and a sort of fishy complexion and strange, narrow teeth. It's a much friendlier look and adds a lot of personality to the toy. This head is not exclusive to this release, a blue version is included with the Ggrapptikk Soldier. The head has some green on it - as do the forearms - and it adds a lot of personality to the figure. It made me think of a lot of the current crop of customized Kaiju toys but the green also appears on the original figure.

The third big change? This Ggripptogg is slathered in paint. The body is made of red, black, and grey plastic and it's covered in red, black, and grey paint. While this may seem redundant, let me tell you the effect is always fantastic - the first Outer Space Men from the Four Horsemen were made this way and it gave the figures a rich, delightful look. Bare plastic looks acceptable, white plastic painted up usually looks good, but red painted over red? Gorgeous. The way the light bounces off the paint is quite pleasing, even in a dark room the textures seem to pop a little better and the black looks more lively and less like a detail-eating void.

As far as bang for the buck goes, Ggripptogg is the best version of this mold you can buy right now - which works out well, as he's the only one that didn't sell out from the carded and painted batch. A $15 Ggrapptikk Grunt is still available at press time and is arguably worth the money too, but the added paint and double-facedness of Ggripptogg here makes him a worthwhile purchase. He has no real problems holding his weapons, and the deco is superb. Spend some money on this one.

--Adam Pawlus

Collector's upgrade notes: additional red Ggripptogg parts were included with the club-exclusive blue Ggrapptikk action figure, released at the same time. Bonus parts include a one-sided single-face Ggripptogg head plus sets of alternate forearms.
