If there are two figures you're going to want in any Star Trek line, they will likely start with Spock and/or Captain James T. Kirk. William Shatner is a legend for all sorts of reasons, and as such, toy collectors probably want to have him as some form of action figure. The 1990s interpretation from Playmates is pretty excellent, as they even gave him little tiny lines in his forehead-- generally, you don't see this level of detail in your toys.
While all of the figures in this boxed set are pretty good, this one is particularly lively. The eyes sport three colors of paint, which is almost unheard of in that time, plus his lips have a tiny dash of pink on them. The face really does seem like it has a lot more personality than other figures, even Playmates' own figures from the recent 2009 Star Trek movie didn't quite have this level of personality. The sculptors did a bang-up job here, even if Kirk just looks slightly older than what I presume would be the ideal-- check out all those marks in his head.
The articulation is the same as the other figures, and unfortunately Playmates didn't quite design him to sit in his bridge chair. Sure, he can sit, but it's awkward. If the Diamond Select-scale figures or Mego figures aren't your thing, this is a wonderful traditional 1990s action figure that's worth adding to your collection. Playmates never did a better Kirk, and they did quite a few after this first attempt. Be sure you get one.
