The Masters of the Universe Classics line has figures which can fall in one of three categories: things I've always wanted, things I don't care for, and things I didn't think I would love until I opened the box. As I write this (a while back) Callix was just torn out of his packaging and wow - this is impressive for a figure of a character I don't care about. I just wrote about the new Star Wars Resistance Trooper minutes earlier and, while neat, it's OK. I have no real connection to either character, but one area Masters of the Universe shines is that even if you don't care about the character, you will find it difficult to dismiss the execution.
Callix uses the same basic body buck that we have always used with new "armor," including feet and shins plus giant rock hands and forearms. The head is new, the armor is rocky, and you can see non-rocky flesh bits in there. It's not perfect, but it's quite good - it's true to the line and the big feet afford him enhanced stability. This is good, because they forgot to give him foot peg holes.
The rocky sculpting is consistent throughout, and even matches the accessories. He's grey, with hints of black detailing and some lighter tan for the Horde symbols. Shiny black eyes bring his face to life, complete with a rock "scar" across his lips and a wonderful scowl just above his rocky beard. The cracks in his face imply age and his position as a survivor - this is someone who has been beaten up a bit. The lack of paint probably helped put more money into the newly tooled parts, which is handy given the two big accessories - an axe crossbow, and a shield.
The tan from the chest is carried over to the shield, and the crossbow axe's grip as well. He has no problems holding either, which is good given that he has new hands and new weapons and it'd be a crime if they couldn't fit. The axe is a neat way to double up on functionality - it allows you to have another Horde member with a crossbow, while also giving him a much more impressive giant axe. Sure, it'd be great if the shield were a tad larger but when you're made of rock, I assume your body is probably your best defense mechanism anyway. If you're made of armor, do you really need more armor?
This is one of those oddities that I'd suggest is more exciting for casual toy fans than for casual fans of this line. I love what Mattel is doing this and next year, but at the same time my collection - despite not having an update of every last figure - feels pretty complete. On the other hand, I like wacky weird stuff - and a Four Horsemen-designed rock man warrior is pretty awesome. Were this a Kickstarter, I'd have bought into it. I suggest you get one if the price is right (i.e., drops) because $60 is too much for a figure. But $40ish? That ain't bad.
