I saw Indominus Rex around in 2025 and didn't pay her too much mind, because I had the (formerly very expensive) Jurassic World Hybrid Rampage Indominus Rex [FOTD #1,560]. I was telling myself I didn't need both - Hasbro's weirder toy had wackier colors, more extreme spikes, and a more skull-like paint job that reminded me of some of the stranger sofubi kaiju toys I can't afford. Hasbro went absolutely nuts as their license was ending, and I got 'em all. Mattel really caught my eye with their Jurassic Park '93 and Reimagined toys, but hey - I got a lot of toys. I had to take a step back. And I did, until getting a few of these on clearance, and then finding more on sale.
This item originally came out around summer of 2025. It sold through. It's uncommon and actually outright rare for an exclusive, but I stumbled on one at the north Scottsdale Target - I rarely make it up there because it's not near much fun - and they had several. I made a note to go back and get it later. And then several more Targets had stock within a couple of weeks. And then there was a 20% off sale, so I had to get her.
The toy is a little silly, but so is the premise of the movie monster. A giant raptor, with T-Rex, frog, cuttlefish, and other parts, can somehow magically communicate with raptors despite being socially isolated and the dinosaur equivalent of an abused animal? And it can turn invisible and mask its body heat? Sure. Adding some orange or extra spikes doesn't really make it any more or less goofy.

She's a bit smaller than the Destroy N' Devour Indominus Rex, which I have, and I am not sure how. I can tell you roughly where most of the toys I got came from - a gift, a purchase, something from work - but that one? I have no idea how I got it or who gave it to me. But I digress. She seems to be derived from the same CAD files, but the Reimagined version has different tooling. This one has jointed ankles, hips that can rotate and pivot out slightly, and the traditional bend-and-rotate shoulders. The mouth can open super wide, and that's it. No knees, no elbows, and no buttons to trigger an opening mouth. Instead, the buttons activate one of a few roars. It's a pretty good design, and it seemed to bring down the price of Hasbro's model.
The 22-inch-long dinosaur stands pretty well, which puts her in a class above Hasbro's models. Mattel designed her with proportions more similar to the Jurassic World movie designs, unlike the big-headed Hasbro versions. Each has its own charms. It seems to closely match the design of even the Hammond Collection toy, but without the higher level of articulation or detail. Or the skull cavaties painted in. Or a jointed tongue. .
But you know what Clyde Crashcup always said - the proof of the toy is in the eating. The I-Rex teeth are a separate, flexible mold. The mouth is pink and shiny, and you can toss smaller figures down her gullet. I wish the opening in the belly were bigger, so she can easily eat chunkier people. I found her throat too small to eat a Yak Face (and oh, am I happy to just happen to have one on my desk to check) but it was big enough to feed her a Legacy Tembo. I found it simple to retrieve him from the belly. Mattel did a nice job here, especially since Kenner made its original "gulper" T-Rex throat incredibly wide. All of the teeth and spikes have enough flex to them that nothing is going to poke out anybody's eyes. The sculpted textures and folds are good, the claws are great. Many of the simple design choices are excellent, like sculpting the soles of the feet and her claws as a single piece - so no paint is required down there. Also, they won't scuff and lose color. Sadly the finger claws were left un painted.
Deco is good. The gray body has a nifty dark shade painted on the back, with jagged patterns on the tail and a more subtle fade elsewhere. The eyes vary from figure to figure - I was driving around and passed on a dozen that were off a bit, so be sure to check her peepers before purchase. Her red/orange stripe on her back is more red than Hasbro's version, but that's OK. I like seeing inspiration, and I also like seeing stuff changed up a bit so you can build a herd or a family group of different animals. I wish they could have painted her finger claws, but perhaps there's a good reason to not bother given the flexible materials.
I sometimes do go on a bit of a toy bender and this was a purchase on one of those. I mostly got it out of a sense of wanting a complete set. The ones I had were already good, plus I had the weird rare one, so why buy this one? It turns out her jaws open super-wide, and she can chomp the backs of figures like my Triceratops [FOTD #3,164] without a hitch. She roars. She can stand well. She's not super-articulated, but she's more posable than most Kenner or Hasbro toys and features a better center of gravity. I was expecting this paragraph to be one of regrets, of "oh why did I spend another $45 on a silly dinosaur," but it's a really good silly dinosaur. Maybe not every collector needs it, but it makes sense that Hasbro reran it for the holiday selling season. This is a solid toy for kids. Bright colors, plus she can eat your other toys, and roar. I do like the Destroy N' Devour's button controls to bite and grasp, but this is a bit more old-school. It works for me.
Hasbro and Mattel have several other movie-accurate designs which will all be jockeying for some level of authenticity. Hammond is probably going to win fan hearts, but maybe they'll come up with a better expression in a year or two. I doubt we'll ever see a big one with an orange stripe on it again. That's why I wanted this - it's the toy design equivalent of someone saying "be yourself." It's like Walrus Man, or a Lava Planet Predator. If you take it on its own terms, it is delightful and isn't trying to be a movie-precise replica. You have to come at it on its own terms, and if it makes you smile you should get one. I missed - twice - the JP 93 Target-exclusive big Tyrannosaurus Rex, which is one of the reasons I didn't feel bad about just buying this one's reissue. Get while the getting is good.
