I saw the prototypes for these a few months ago, and the first one I opened was Mirage. The "Wheels" series gets you Hot Wheels-sized cars with wheels and parts you put together. They're cool, and pretty cheap. Not as cheap as Mattel's flagship cars, but you do get a fully-painted chassis and snap-on parts. They fit on orange track, but they lack metal axles - so they're not going to be winners in a race. They will, however, look amazing.
The first act is largely inspired by the rarely-seen alt modes from the IDW The Lost Light and More Than Meets the Eye comics. I can't say for sure if this is from that or not - but it looks like it could be. It's not quite as otherworldly as what we saw in the pages, but it's futuristic enough that I have to dig it. Mirage and Drag Strip share a mold, so we'll be seeing the Stunticon sooner or later. Right now, it's the blue guy.
The toy fits together easily. Gray wheel covers go into black wheels. The wheels snap on to plastic pegs. Those parts connect to a plastic base, and then you make a sandwich out of the engine and the chassis. Plug in the windshield and spoiler, and you're done. It takes less than a minute, and you'll need to squint to see the instructions.
The deco is on par with a decent Hot Wheels car. Mirage ha his name written on the side, as well as 26. There's a red Autobot symbol, some white markings, and some red highlights. The metallic blue paint looks really good, making for an excellent display piece. The spoiler is a little wobbly, so be aware of that if you send it to race tracks or let a kid play with it. It rolls fairly well, it just can't compete with a company who has been making them for six decades. Not yet, anyway, if these guys ever get metal axles in these we'll probably see some real competition in this space.
As far as I can tell, the paint is extremely nicely done and everything looks good. I wish I had more to say - the detail looks more like a die-cast toy car than a Hasbro or Takara-Tomy product. It's not perfect, but it's very very good.
Mirage has no special bonus accessories or parts, just giving you a futuristic race car. I've really missed the fanciful futuristic cars of the 1980s in Hasbro's line-up. A lot of the newer vehicles look great, but they're generally pretty grounded. This thing looks like a rocket, or something out of some manga I missed. If you buy a mystery box and get this one, I believe you will be impressed. If you can find one of these guys for about $4 or less, give it a spin. You'll probably want to buy another one.
