Hasbro Transformers Age of the Primes Deluxe SureshotWhile Studio Series 86 continues to deliver a "who's who" of updates and remakes, Age of the Primes is deep into "who's that?" Today it's Sureshot, who was last sold in stores in 1987 with some pretty fancy stickers compared to this release. I never had the original, so this is a new experience. I was surprised that the original toy seemed to have more going on visually, thanks to the stickers. This new one certainly feels more like a toy than a "collectible figure," in part due to a lack of jointed wrists or very much deco if any kind. It was an unfortunate release to come out at the same time as others with the $27.99 price increase. It's good, but it's not as good or fancy or shiny as other guys. Also, the knees showed signs of stress immediately upon first transformation. All of the robot pictures were fresh out of the box, but the vehicle mode pictures - specifically the bottom of the buggy - show that the plastic isn't right for the tolerances.

The Targetmaster buddy Spoilsport is about as simple as the original (albeit with a looser barrel,) while Sureshot is considerably more posable than the original. Is it worth it? I can usually find a way to get to "yes," but in this case I think you might want to wait for a sale. Since originally drafting this review, I probably should have skipped it. I'll probably not play with this one again.

The robot mode looks like the original 1987 toy, but without stickers. As such, it's a lot plainer and cast in a red plastic prone to stress marks. You might want to leave this one in the box, or never transform it. The figure has no rotating wrists, but there's decent movement with rocker ankles and swivel biceps. He can hold his blaster, and sculpted detail is on par with most modern figures. The head has a painted gray face with a blue visor... and if it sounds like I don't have much to say here, I don't. The little orange spoilers pop off easily, and I don't think I'll be touching it much to avoid further signs of stress. I wouldn't say it's a bad robot figure but it doesn't impress me like Quickstrike or Quintus Prime from the same wave.

Transformation is a little involved, and you'll need to take care to not knock his spoilers off. Also, it seems it may have put some stress on the red plastic that makes up his shins on the very first transformation - so you might want to leave him in robot mode. The arms become the back of the car, the legs go under the vehicle, and the chest expands to give you the front. Detailing it on the low side for the modern era, but with nice bright colors. It reminded me a lot of the actual toys we used to get, with colorful yellow wheel caps and a lot of hollow elements. It looks a lot like the original buggy from the 1980s, which means it isn't impressive. It's fine, it's good.

Spoilsport has a ratchety midsection joint, a loose barrel joint, and is easy to transform. He has a blue visor rather than the original's red face... and I think he's fine. I wouldn't mind having more little guys like this. Everything makes a snap or a click, so he feels pretty locked-in-place for his blaster mode.

I wasn't a big fan of Pointblank, and I don't think I'm in love with Sureshot either. It feels less awkward, even if it does feel more like a toy than a collector figure in good ways and bad. While that's normally good, it carries a collector price and a face that most fans might not recognize. I'm glad Hasbro did it, because I like getting new-to-me guys. It doesn't feel like a particularly fresh toy, but it'll be a good one to get if you're a fan looking to get remakes of the entire 1980s roster. It's not like you have more than one Sureshot already... but oddly, this is the fourth Spoilsport toy.
