You can't win 'em all. Changeables Torrus turns into playground equipment from the "Play Place," which is sort of an indoor park for kids at a number of McDonald's locations. Many competitors copied it - some have since dropped them - but it was a real innovation. Giving kids toys made them (technically) the biggest toy store in the country, and somewhere to play ensured kids would ask to go there. And some of that stuck into adulthood. I've rarely gone there as an adult, but I can be bribed with a toy. Obviously. You've seen my web site.

I don't love this one. It's pretty big, unfolding to give you a 3 3/4-inch dinosaur in some sort of blue box armor. The neck folds up, the little arms articulate, and a tail folds out. Stickers augment the exterior, while paint on his eyes and teeth bring him to life. It reminds me of some under-3 toys. The colors are bright and pleasing, but as I don't associate baby blue with playground equipment the whole alt mode was lost on me.
The head reminds me a bit of some of the G.I. Joe Star Brigade aliens, what with the distinctive teeth and odd proportions. If I didn't know it was supposed to be a dinosaur, I'd have guessed it was an alien in a box.

It unfolds like some of the transforming cups, but it just left me a little cold. I realize that this is completely stupid to say, as an adult, commenting on a free toy for children. But it's just much odder than the robot french fries or some of the other designs, and I have space to fill, so why not? If you're reading this in 2046 and got one of these as a kid, and I'm not dead yet, I'd love to hear from you. If you liked it, if it was a treasured childhood toy, or if it's sitting in the landfill, I'd be curious. It's by no means dull - multiple moving parts make it fun to fidget with, and the low price probably means kids might take it around with them rather than leave it at home.
I think the line is a good idea, and I'm planning on getting more of these if I can find them before the deal ends. Again, I realize this is silly to say as an adult, but I still need to get lunch. I can be bribed. I'd rather Long John Silvers give away Kenner figures, but life doesn't like me that much. Fake Transformers at McDonald's will have to do.
