A very recent 2021 Hot Wheels car got the robot treatment. I was surprised Hasbro went with the GT-Scorcher. When I first heard they were going with this one I kind of shrugged, because it wasn't a shark or didn't have mummy wrappings on it or something weird. But it's a sensible choice.

GT-Scorcher follows the pattern of last year's wave... and that's good! The design favors the Mattel car mode first, and then makes a pretty decent robot out of it using some good and some weird design choices.

GT-Scorcher the robot has a lot of joints you expect, and some you might not. I was surprised by the double-jointed knees... and the weird peg on the leg that goes into the foot. The hips have a surprising cut on the sides, but the range of movement is excellent. You don't get swivel wrists, and you do get an arm that partially tabs into the torso, but the range of movement is generally on par with main line deluxe toys. He's not a big guy, and he costs a bit more, but he feels fresh.

The figure's bright colors remind me of some of the better stuff from the 1990s, with orange light-up eyes that actually work real well on my desk as I type this. The silver face is painted well, with a good hint of a smirk. The nose is great, and the helmet design is fine. It's a little blocky, but it doesn't make me immediately think that they just did a riff on an existing character. The detailing is consistent with other figures in the line, complete with vents and a lot of painted bits. The knees didn't need to be painted, but they are! It looks great. The silver thighs look great, and the various tampos give it a bit more life. Aside from the hips and feet, this guy looks and feels more or less like any other Deluxe-class toy. And I mean that as a compliment. The Hot Wheels robots stand out as generally vibrant and colorful, plus they make the line a bit more exciting alongside the fan-friendly redux of remake cycle. It's good for business, but at some point people are going to see their 15th Bumblebee and shrug. Unfortunately they don't have any nostalgia for GT-Scorcher, which is a challenge for getting a new guy like this in fan hands.

Transformation isn't too rough, and I find these guys to be more pleasant. Starting from car mode, you just pull apart the bits and pieces and get yourself a nice robot eventually. As a fan I've always found it easy to go from car to robot, but without packaging the toy in car mode I often feel like there might be compromises. As long as I can see the car in the package, I trust I can do it too - and in this case I can. One particularly clever bit are his sword weapons tucking into his spoiler.

Going from robot to car was also fairly simple, so I can say I like this one. Put the spoiler part on last, though.

The car is very similar to the 2022 red release with different livery. Ryu Asada's name was removed from the spoiler, and the windows were changed from dark gray (on the Hot Wheels toy) to orange for the robot in disguise. I'm not sure why they wanted to change out the pretty awesome logos on the $1.25 car for multiple Hot Wheels logos, but I suppose that's why I'm not in the branding biz. The car looks a lot like Mattel's toy, just a bit wider. The wheels don't roll particularly well, but they look good. I'll take looks when it comes to a decent collab toy.

I recommend this one. A new robot that turns into a popular toy from another manufacturer is always fun, and I like the bright red color. Articulation is good, and it's nice to have a robot figure that turns into a car that isn't like the hundreds of others we've bought over the years. I'd love to see Hasbro make up new cars, and new robots, in its "Legacy" lines - but I can understand it's hard to sell those to cranky collectors. It's hard to get out of the nostalgia spiral some times, but a figure like this draws me back in to what I liked about Transformers in the first place. It was fun to get a car or dinosaur or creature, unfold it, and meet a new robot inside. That's been rare lately, so I'd recommend getting one and having that experience for yourself.
