As a Maximal commander, Optimus Primal surprised me by sharing no parts with his gorilla counterpart from the same assortment other than the fists. If Blokees used the same forearms or lower legs, I don't think anyone would complain. Even the fists have different colors, so it's nice to see the company do a little more work than was required here.

If you had the original Ultra-class Kenner toy from 1996, you no doubt remember his swords, or rocket-firing pop-open fist, or skull mace. This toy doesn't have those, but he does have cannons over his shoulders that kind of, sort of resemble the toy and the show. There's no reason to include a lot of gear here and physics may make gimmicks impossible, so what you have here is the very best non-chase, basic, decent Optimus Primal figure $3 can buy.

Assembling Optimus Primal gets you a figure with a familiar silhouette. His helmet looks like the cartoon, complete with open-mouth face plate. The colors are somewhere between the cartoon and the toy. Little greeblies on the chest and shins have tiny details that pop nicely, giving you a pretty decent collectible figure. It feels like what we saw on TV 30 years ago, only smaller, and maybe a little lighter on detailing. The red eyes match the toy and cartoon, with gray lips, and a nicely decorated chest that more closely matches the TB show. It's not an exact match for anything - there's no white and red on the arms, or the red balls around the hips, but it's pretty close. The fur texture doesn't match the show, but the color and vibe seems good.

Articulation is consistent with the rest of the line, which means you've got a robot with about 14 ball joints plus swiveling cannons. That's pretty good. For the size, it's arguably best-in-class. I grew up with Battle Beasts and M.U.S.C.L.E., which had two or zero joints respectively. This is an improvement, and pricing these against toy inflation they fare favorably.

This particular model has shoulder cannons you can flip up, but honestly I'm not a big fan. They feel like strange LEGO lightsaber hilts. It just doesn't look quite right - maybe it's the shape, or the color. You can leave them off if you like. A "mutant head" and swords are included with the chase figure, but you won't be finding that, so you can just enjoy this one for what it is.

I don't like it as much as Cheetor, but it's good enough that I would love to see more Maximals and Predacons down the road. Hopefully someone over there is working on Waspinator and Rattrap, but if they aren't? This is the right character to do, priced well, and executed surprisingly well for the price. I'd recommend picking up the wave, and so far, I've only opened a little more than half of it. I can't imagine anybody who enjoyed Beast Wars not wanting these guys, and I assume they'll be fawned over for years to come. Well, until our generation ages out, I don't know if there are new fans of the show at this point. Keep 'em coming, Blokees, these are great.
