Reissued last year, Ecto-Glow Heroes Peter Venkman was super exciting to finally get. As a kid, I was mostly getting figures in their main outfits and then stopping - so I never got this one until the reissue. I loved getting it for non-secondary market prices, and it also seemed like a good time to start doing rereleases like this. The originals are only getting more expensive, and the kids of the 1980s that might still appreciate just having a cheap one aren't getting any younger. This item was an exclusive for San Diego Comic-Con, which went back into production, and is still in stock (for $10 more) as of my writing this.

This was the first Ecto-Glow item Hasbro reissued as part of a boxed set, and Ecto-1 should be shipping around the time this goes live. Mr. Stay-Puft and the Green Ghost are getting new glow toys any month now, and at least one more vehicle and figure were announced last year. It's nice to see someone take the initiative and give people want they want - green glowing things.

Originally released in 1991, this 4 1/2-inch-ish figure is basically the original Peter figure cast in glow plastic, with slightly different accessories, and a different ghost. It's not quite as sharp as the original, but it's pretty close. Glow plastic tends to wash out detailing anyway, so the basic form looks right and the painted details look a lot like the original glowing figure, what with the Kenner-style eyes, flesh-painted hands, and the giant name emblazoned over his chest. It's kind of silly, but not entirely uncommon in this era. We saw it in Transformers for a bit, too. The green and blue shapes look like something a kid might wear on their PJs, or maybe something we'd see on a sci-fi show. It's also worth noting he has his no-ghost symbol on his sleeve plus a fully painted head under the glow mask.

The mask looks more or less like the figure's face, and the proton pack looks like the other proton packs. It works, with eye deco that's barely different from the original. The wand clips to the side, and the squiggly neutron blast looks great. With the handle on the back, it can spin around. It's a simple mechanism, but it works. The hose connecting the two parts is now pink, whereas the orignals were a darker purple color. Will anyone but hte most hardcore know, notice, or care? Probably not.

Peter's ghost nemesis is the Arachnid Ghost. It was first sold as a clear green sidekick to Super Fright Features Egon, but Kenner being Kenner, they reused the mold a few years later. It was a smart move. The sculpting here still looks pretty good, and it retained the unique hockey puck-shaped cut-out on the bottom. Originally, this was so he can sit on Egon's head. Here, it serves no functional purpose. His eyes are painted pink, and that's really all there is to it. It's a cool little buddy figure, and it would have been cool to have had Hasbro rerelease more of these as blind boxes or some such. Maybe we'll get more when the next revival sequel comes out.

Hasbro reissued the original version of this figure a few times, and this is the same mold. You can tell because of the 2020 copyright date sculpted in his boot. I really like this figure, and while $80 - now $90 - isn't cheap, it's still pretty decent for one of the rarest figures produced in the original line-up. Indie glow-in-the-dark figures cost about the same, and don't have as much gear. Or a license. I feel like this is one of those things that will make fans shout "take my money," or they'll just ignore. In this case we saw both happen as that last production run did not sell through. A pity, it's a great set and I need to open the rest of them still. I was spreading them out because, really, how many more times in my life can I open affordable reproductions of figures I wanted as a child?
