The gorilla your dreams! This Optimus Primal-Gorilla is pretty great in the ways that the Megatron T. rex is pretty mid. This figure is built better than a typical Defender figure, with a new elbow assembly and increased mid-torso pivoting action. It's not a perfect match for the cartoon or toy, but it's cute. It's good. You'll like it.

Assembling Optimus Primal-Gorilla is pretty easy. The fists seem to be the same as a normal robot, but everything else is pretty much new. Put the red eyes in the ape head, put some pieces together and build a torso, connect the arm bits to a new elbow assembly, and you've got a perfectly nice gorilla figure. If Blokees made it without a license, I don't think Hasbro would complain much. The figure's blueish face, hands, chest, and toes don't really look like other versions of the character, making this a fresh interpretation. The colors are vaguely like the Masterpiece Edition toy and cartoon, the red eyes are sort of like the Kenner toy, and maybe the proportions match the CG model. But the face and chin sure don't, with the figure's back not looking like anything specific at all. I'll be curious to see where, if anywhere, these parts are reused.

Articulation is very good for the size, with elbows that can beat his chest and a back with enough movement to allow him to walk on all fours. He can assume a fighting stance too, giving this little guy more personality than most of his peers in this line. I like what they did here. The fists can hold accessories, but he doesn't include any. Having said that, his legs are wide enough apart that he can ride Megatron, which gives me hope he can ride a hypothetical Rhinox. That would be fun.

There's a knee-jerk reaction to ask for Beast Wars any time something new comes out for Transformers, and this guy seems to justify it. It may not be what anyone asked for, but it's a fun figure that's well-crafted at a very reasonable price. As I write this I'm probably more excited about the little Beast Wars guys than anything else, mostly because it'll be fun to put the Maximals and Predacons next to my old Battle Beasts. If you're a fan of this kind of thing, I'd recommend picking up this case. It's decently mixed, and even if you don't care about two or three of them I'm sure you can find them a good home.
