Foreshadowing in its most plastic form, Leonardo from Turtles of Grayskull kicked off what is one of the bigger seismic shifts in the toy biz - Playmates' tenure of TMNT ending for Mattel. And from the sound of things, other licensees may not continue forward, so it's an exciting and weird time to look at the future of the green teens. Granted, 2024 was also weird because we saw what happened when you got a 1982 toy line in a 1988 toy line. It's both a very sensible crossover, but also one that seems targeted to a micro-generation as a lot of He-Man kids grew out of toys by the time Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were all the rage. Similarly, He-Man was old hat by the end of the 1980s - so for anyone who was incredibly young in 1982? This is for you. And there are a lot of pop culture junkies of all ages that just appreciate a nice toy.

Leo's body shares parts with many Origins figures and the bulk of his brothers from the series, incorporating the then-new "shell" body with three-fingered hands and two toed feet.

The brothers have unique elements like a distinctive head with articulated bandanna, slide-on armor, and of course coordinated highlights in their leg wraps. Leo has a big L on his chest, matching the first cartoons and action figures. It also looks a little like He-Man's cross. The furry shorts are gone, but you have blue armor plating dangling in a sensitive spot. Each arm has silver bracelets, and in addition shell-like arm pads he has a removable shell shield on his back.

The swords are fun, because Mattel did the whole "two halves of the Power Sword" thing in one toy. Leo's twin katanas are now big, curved affairs that can mesh in the middle. I was surprised to look at them while writing this review in July of 2026, and they haven't separated over the past few months. He has no problems holding them, but when joined they don't fit in the storage slot in his shell.

If you're old enough to remember the Warriors of the Forgotten Sewer series, he's kind of like that. Grayskull Leo sadly dropped the toupee, but carried over the furry cape and brown boots. It's nice to see some elements of those old toys make an encore appearance, especially if you're one of those people that still regrets not buying it back in 1994.

It's an amazing crossover considering that the Turtles completely eclipsed the Masters as toy companies and their media partners mastered the art of advertainment. Turtles more or less reigned supreme after its introduction, and its cartoon lasted 10 years with only a slightly higher episode count than what He-Man did in two. But, both are still around today, and Mattel is profiting off them all - I guess that's who really won here. And, of course, the toy collectors that wanted both brands to play nicely together. I like this figure a lot. If you missed it for $20, this bulky-armored shelled warrior fell out of favor and can currently be purchased for under retail price. This happens a lot with lines after they end but before people really start to go "wait, did I buy that one?" Take advantage of the soft market and pick one up while he's cheaper.
