This Turtles of Grayskull Beast Man is the kind of thing you expected from toy companies in the old days. At its core, it's the 2020 Beast Man figure with a different left hand and a massive equipment upgrade. The old string whip is gone, replaced by a chain whip, and a helmet, and a shield, and shoulder armor, and lower body armor. That seems like a fair trade.

If you're a new collector to this line, I'd say that this Beast Man would replace the original - especially since you can just swipe the Filmation one's whip if you really need it. The chain whip with this figure is really cool, and I prefer this Beast Man's gripping left hand. He loses a little nose paint, but other than that? This is pretty much the same figure, down to the furry shoe-like feet without toes or claws.

The figure could have been a new character - if Mattel changed the plastic color of the figure and renamed him, the new face mask and gear could have expanded the universe a bit. The new helmet not only has a face, but eye openings so you can see the figure's peepers. The interior of the helmet has grooves specifically for the Klingon-esque head ridges, with a new skirt piece that changes his silhouette along with the not-quite-turtle pattern shoulder armor. The shield very much has a turtle shell pattern, and comes with pegs that could mount in the back of other figures - like the turtles themselves.

His armor is nicely sculpted, and while not a perfect fit it does stay on rather well. If you play with it a lot, the armor on the arms may slide off and I've found the shield tends to fall out of the hand at times, but I could probably fix the hand. His chest armor looks a smidgen different than the previous Beast Man figure, with similar colors applied slightly differently. If you didn't have them side-by-side to compare them, you might think they're more or less identical..

I've seen very few of this figure's wave in stores, so I assume it has either been selling, or not showing up. For about twenty bucks, it's a nice plussed up version of an existing figure - but not as cool as the other figures with new heads or more new elements. I would love to see more figures similar to this, with new armor and accessories plus a mask or helmet that could give them a new identity. "Beast Man Oni" isn't the kind of thing I would have ever thought to request, so I'll just say I like it and am delighted that any collector line can come up with something in the spirit of classic toys that's new enough to not be another boring retread. I wouldn't recommend this as your first figure to buy for Masters of the Universe, but definitely make it your first toy-style Beast Man. You won't have a reason to buy the other one, it's a striking figure with a new enough feel to justify the purchase. And he can stand without help.
