Super7 really nailed the vibes of SilverHawks with its ReAction Figure line, so I bought the set. Mon*Star is the main bad guy in the show, effectively Mumm-Ra but more influenced by sci-fi and anime. He was in charge of the Limbo Mob, the show's bad guys. Many 1980s cartoons were built similarly to sell toys - you basically had two conflicting gangs between maybe a dozen people and somehow this had galactic importance. See also Transformers, DinoSaucers, Dino-Riders, C.O.P.S., StarCom, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, and I could go on.

On the cartoons, this guy turned from a hairy alien in an eyepatch into a big armored spiky armored warrior. The original Kenner toy reflected this, but Super7's figure just focuses on the figure's pre-transformation form.

Like his name suggests, he's something of a monster with animal-like feet, claw-like hands, nasty fangs, a wild mane, and nasty teeth - plus a loincloth, but those were in fashion back then on Eternia and many other worlds. The loincloth feels very modern, and somewhat restricts his legs from swinging forward - but it has more give than a similar Hasbro element. His big hands feel very much like those of Venom[FOTD #2,491] from the recent Kenner Marvel line, larger and more dangerous than a typical hand or fist. Mon*star also has hair coming out of his elbows, and a massive mane of hair. Super7 seemed to turn it down here a bit, which makes sense - it's positively wild in the cartoon. The ReActions from this show seem intent on merging the toy (which has very little hair) with the cartoon (which has maximum hair), and does so rather well. The Ultimates! figure, though, probably does the best job of translating the head into three dimensions.

You get a standard five joints, with minimal restrictions. The aforementioned loincloth gets in the way a bit, and the big hair - a separately molded wig like some recent Hasbro figures - does block rotation slightly. Had they fully fleshed it out, it might be fragile or just not move. Super7 sculptors also gave this guy his shoulder spikes and boy howdy are they pointy. Be careful with them - they seem sharp, and I don't know how fragile they may be. His closed mouth seems to downplay the character's snarling and shouting, but that's typical of many 3 3/4-inch toys. Open mouths were a rarity in the 1980s. The sculpt itself is not entirely all that different from the unreleased Kenner Mon*Star with Laser Lance figure, and I think this figure - with the brighter chest reds - may have intentionally drawn from that prototype design.

The figure can stand, and more or less sit, but I think you'll be leaving him carded or standing in a playset. His cartoony and colorful look seems right at home menacing Jord Dusat or standing around the back of a cantina somewhere. The original design looks like a number of sci-fi alien bruisers, and to my mind he reminds me more of a Nausicaan or Chalnoth - both of which would be on Star Trek years after Mon*Star threatened to force Hardware to go back to working on software. I guess it was a threat or something, I haven't seen that episode in over thirty years.

There are better versions of Mon*Star, but not at this size, and arguably not this versatile. I like this format a lot, so any figure that seems like it would fit in with the monster and alien toys I already own is most welcome. Had Marvel stuck this guy in its Star Wars comic books, I'd probably think he'd fit right in - and he looks nice next to so many other action figures, too. I'd suggest giving him a look, just understanding that the budget that would have gone to accessories probably got spent on his beard and wig. He doesn't match the toy or the toon properly - but like the others in this line, he looks cool. And sometimes all I want is a figure that looks cool. The galaxy needs more space bad guys, and hopefully Super7 will get a few more out before this series comes to an end.
