I didn't have any Micronauts as a kid, so Microtron is kind of an unknown to me. The toy Mego sold in the 1970s was a larger, motorized vehicle with loads of swappable parts, real moving treads, spinning arms, and a head you could open up and use as a seat for 3 3/4-inch figures - and other stuff. It was a plaything to entertain kids for a long period of time, and it looks a lot like Super7's new toy which is a shorty as 3 3/4-inch figures go. Slightly taller than your average modern R2-D2, Microtron has a few jointed parts and really doesn't benefit much from the o-ring construction. But he has awesome vac-metal silver parts, and he looks cool.

While obviously not the magical toy with loads of gimmicks of old, he's a pretty neat robot that looks sort of like the typical work out of Takara or Tomy and is sized to hang out with some of your other action figures. Packaged with the wheels on the arms, his bubble is massive and he has a drill you can put on his chest... or other places. You can swap parts with other O-Ring ReAction+ figures, but the wheels and drill don't really fit in with other vintage toys. They won't connect.

The only place the o-ring really serves a purpose is for the waist - the legs swivel themselves, the arms seem to be more or less normal Joe-esque joints. There are no swivel biceps, but you get a bending elbow and some really nice chrome on the visor, arms, and drill. He has a tampo on his chest to match the original toy's decoration, but is otherwise mostly molded in color save for some red on the legs. Thanks to that lack of paint, it looks more like a toy than a collector-level action figure. I'm good with this. The smaller size mimics his look in the comics, so I assume there are fans who are just fine with the fact he's not a giant vehicle.

Super7's sculptors did a good job of making something that feels like it's a super old toy. I'm assuming they used digital sculpting and it really helps to make those hard plastic pieces feel like old plastic pieces - everything is pretty smooth, minus a few oddly textured spots on the head. While some of the human figures lack a bit of an organic touch, that's not a problem here. It's a machine, made on a machine, and made by machines - it's great. On my desk next to other robot toys, it feels right but it might not compare favorably to cheaper competitors like Blokees. But Blokees doesn't have vac-metal parts or a Micronauts license, and with so few figures this decade I'm OK buying a $25 smaller figure.

Super7's ReAction+ Figures exist outside the logic of toy purchases. It's not an indie figure with a tiny run, nor is it a mass-market collector figure with photo real printing and alternate heads and gear. It's sort of an expensive cheap toy, with a good license, and a really good sense of style. It's not for everybody, but I can say it's neat enough that I like having it around. If Super7 made 10-20 of these guys in a year, though, I'd probably burn out and move on - but four? I can deal with four. While there's no real mechanism to play with here, he looks nice on a shelf and is more retro than a lot of these guys. If you see it in stores, take a close look at it. I love the colors and deco choices.
