Hasbro Transformers Age of the Primes Leader The Thirteen Onyx Prime

This is the patron saint of beast modes. Onyx Prime has had few toys, and none were as ambitious as this one. Depending on where you look the robot mode is a biped robot or a Centaur - the toy can do both. There's also a hippogriff mode, which you can have with two or four legs. The toy has a beast head and a robot head with battle mask, giving you quite a few options as to how you want to interpret the character.

As I didn't read a ton of the Prime-era stuff, I mostly know the character in his IDW form, which was Shockwave in a bluer body. I'd buy this toy again in those colors, but brown makes sense for a robot animal mash-up too.

The robot - or centaur - modes are pretty great. I need to use the instructions because there's so much room for interpretation that it's not obvious that any form is "correct" to me, so I can say the default form is pretty good. There are nifty hooves, the clawd hands are no slouch, and the face under the mask looks pretty great. The wings sometimes pop off (such is life) and he can hold the spear with no real problems. The shoulder joints have a lot of extra movement for posing with the bow and arrow, giving you a robot that's definitely more geared to adult collectors. It doesn't "just work," you're going to have to spend some time massaging the limbs to get joints exactly where you want them to be.

The figure does a great job matching the various concepts, giving the vibes of the drawings with colors to match. I'd personally love a little more contrast because it's easier to make out what's what, but given the amount of variety one can squeeze from the body it's probably good to keep everything uniform.

The centaur mode is pretty great - four legs, stable, decent arm movement. It looks very similar because the wings and legs are still wings and legs. You can rotate the body a bit and add some legs, but it's still more or less similar. It's nice to have options.

The tail can fold out and become a pretty nice bow, with the spear becoming a makeshift arrow. It works! Posing him to be aiming it was a little challenging, and I assume I'll be leaving this guy as a two-legged robot most of the time for space reasons.

It took a bit more work prying the beast mode out of this guy, and again I've seen pictures of it with four or six legs. I think it looks better with four. There are some gappy bits around the wings, but the head is neat and the articulation is pretty decent. The forelimbs are clearly arms with hands, a creature born of a robot-first design and it shows. There are some gaps here and there and you can probably only get so much out of the budget without making this a Commander-class toy. Given fans don't really have too many preconceptions of how it should look, it doesn't look bad - the important thing is that the robot was right, and it is. I like his monster face's personality, but I could really have gone for some brighter colors to bring it out. For some reason I think it would look good in red, too.

What's really funny is that if you skip the six-legged beast, going from four-legged beast to two-legged robot is simple. It takes seconds. There's really not much to it. I've always found beast toys to be a little complicated, mostly because (especially with fantasy creatures) it's not obvious what the endpoint is. He doesn't necessarily need wings in either mode, which adds more mass to what is ultimately not a terribly complicated design. It just looks (and feels) that way. For a toy inspired by an abundance of 2D art errors, Hasbro did a nice job ensuring it came out in a way that should hopefully satisfy fan interests in any of the modes. But, obviously, there's a whole separate color scheme some of us are going to want too.

The spear turned out well as a two-piece accessory. Theres nothing truly amazing here - it matches the art, and that's a good start. One unfortunate thing about the Thirteen is the only "faction logo" is a little thing on the base of the spear head, and it lacks the kind of icons we're used to seeing on so many shoulders or chests. It serves as a reminder that what makes a Transformers figure goes beyond shape-changing, and other little icons like that separate it from any other mech toy.

We don't get a lot of monsters that truly feel like beasts from some fantasy realm, so this stands out in a post-post-Beast Hunters landscape. There's no other toy of this character in a similar form, and and hooves are a rarity outside Beast Wars. It stands out in a sea of remakes of remakes. It's nice to have something distinctive, but it's also a little busy and takes some fiddling to get it right in those centaur or six-legged creature modes. With that in mind, those of you looking for a collector-level fidget toy are going to absolutely love this. This character just might inspire a lot of imaginations for the next generation of nostalgists, maybe we'll get a cartoon just based on these guys down the road. Or, you'll just love it for being Shockwave cosplaying as some sort of robot deity.
