The Thirteen Alpha Trion was a figure I almost skipped. I was happy with the A Hero Is Born 2-Pack Alpha Trion [FOTD #2,483] from a few year ago, which put a really good cartoon Alpha Trion head on a perfectly fine Scourge body. It was acceptable for a convention exclusive level of a toy, but Hasbro could do better (and after this one, could still do better.) This is a version of the character without the longer beard, but the body is much closer to the cartoon. It's very close to a version from "Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4" more than anything else. Is it good? Is it bad? It's distinctive, and it's specific. These are things we usually only got in Star Wars, so I appreciate Hasbro making a toy that's arguably new and not cartoon-specific while also being very very similar to a brief blip on a cartoon that was not remembered for its greatness.
This figure is so good on its own merits that is renders that previous Alpha Trion worthy of doing over. But until then, this one is worth getting. Since it's part of The Thirteen, it's also nifty because it's its own thing.

The figure has flourishes of Floro Dery's designs, with that mask and some very thin eyes. The pylons and sweeping sections on his shoulders seem very much of a specific style, and it looks pretty amazing as a toy 40 years later. The character was always sort of an ancient part of Cybertron's history, and he's also held a few other roles here and there. He's been something of an ancient leader, he's been a lion, he's seen it all. The figure has articulated fingers, but not swivel wrists. He can hold (well, stab) the quill at the Covenant of Primus, which actually has jointed pages. It's kind of impressive for a little toy book with a 5mm peg and a cover. With prices going up, it's nice to see a toy like this with accessories that give it a little more "oomph." There's a shield that's also a cape, too. Considering how many tails-as-flails or wings-as-swords we've had over the years, it's nice to see an accessory that exists only to be itself. And it mounts under the vehicle mode. What's more, there's an Autobot symbol you can pry out of the belly which also happens to be molded in clear red plastic. Ooh, ahh.
As a Voyager-class robot, he's got a little bulk to him but he isn't particularly tall. The ankles tilt, the hand are expressive, and you can add a bit more mass to the arms with a couple of easily-lost 5mm peg shoulder growths. It's a nice bonus, but it is a little strange seeing an influx of "some assembly required" to these guys. He stands well with nice big boots, and I had zero problems posing him. It was easy to enjoy and to transform.

With only a photo for reference, it was pretty easy to contort the robot into a space ship. A few bits were a little tricky, but there's a clear start point and end point. There isn't a lot of room for interpretation, as things have tabs and slots to fit together and while some bits - like the knees - move in surprising ways? It was a treat to puzzle through it. I don't think most adult fans will have any problems with this one.

It's a space ship! It won't change the world or anything, and the shield/wing thing is a little silly, but it works. There's an opening cockpit for a Titan Master... but I don't find that it fits so well if you want to close it. Still, it's a nice added play feature on a toy that has few of them. You can cram the quill in there too, and the wedge-shaped vehicle seems to be in line with a lot of the fantasy space ships we have recently enjoyed in this line.
While the vehicle doesn't do a ton for me, I really like the robot mode and it's a worthwhile upgrade from previous Alphas Trion. (Heck, I recently sold my Titans Return one... Hasbro keeps one-upping themselves and my storage capacity has limits.) I like the colors, I love the face, I dig the Autobot symbol and how the light shines through it, I really don't have any complaints about this one. Well, other than it makes my other toys seem less worthy of being in my home. If you see it, and have the cash, go get this one.
