The last time Hasbro did Aerialbot Slingshot, it was a fan channel item, online, renamed Quickslinger, and after the rest of the guys were out there. Instead, mass retail got Alpha Bravo - a new guy who admittedly was cool enough I've been asking if we'll see him again. For Age of the Primes Hasbro stuck to the original lineup, giving us toys that are closer to the cartoon mixed with the 1980s plastic action figures. And it just happens that he looks a lot like Leader-1 from GoBots, a redeco nobody seems in a hurry to make.
He delivers what you can reasonably expect out of a combiner toy in 2025.
The robot has quite a but of articulation. No wrists, but you do get double-jointed elbows and rocker ankles, thigh swivels, and even a waist joint. His shoulders are a little hindered due to a unique, unusual jointing system, but they swivel and can kind of move to the sides. You've had better, but these are acceptable.
The sculpt is very good, with a head that resembles the cartoon and a body that looks a lot like the 2D character model. You don't get the Autobot symbol on the shoulder - it wouldn't look good given the sculpt, nor would it likely fit - but otherwise it looks a lot like an unstickered toy. It is bizarre to not have a visible Autobot symbol on him, but other than that the colors look good. He's mostly molded in color except for a black streak on the chest, black fists, and a painted orange face. The whites are white plastic, and there are some painted bits on the plane kibble. You can see where the pennies aren't going in the budget. His wings sweep back on his lower legs and I'd say Hasbro did a good job modernizing a pretty janky 1986 toy that had to be an arm, a plane, and for all intents and purposes a robot. For 2025 it's decent articulation, and the overall toy is a fair bit better than what we got 10 years ago in Combiner Wars.
While I would have loved more detail or paint on the robot, I can see why it was left out. The animation model is pretty simple, and I assume Hasbro and Takara-Tomy read the tea leaves as to how budgets might be impacted by world events and planned accordingly. With two blasters instead of one, we got a little something extra which makes this work well as an individual toy. The remainder of the Combiner kibble all comes with Silverbolt, much like the original toy.
Robot to jet is pretty easy - swivel around some arms, flip a landing skid out of the head, and everything lines up pretty well. It shouldn't be a problem.
The jet mode is, as usual, not much of a toy. You can mount both 5mm cannons, and that's good, but it's basically a nice brick with wings. There are no play features to speak of, and it would be hard to cram much in here given what it needs to do in terms of robot articulation and to become an arm. The colors are good, and you can see this is where the paint went. The canopy is orange, the nose come is painted black, and you have some blue stripes, red stripes, and an Autobot symbol. It's not as ornate as the toy, but close, and it gives the toy a little color. And it needs some color.
If you look at the instructions, converting the jet to the arm involves lining up tons of pegs, slots, and tabs to hit a sweet spot just right so the jet magically splits in two. I could not make this happen. Instead I just crammed a piece of plastic in the slot, split it, and put it on the pegs. It's much easier. The bisected jet adds some muscle to the skeletal Superion mode, and some wings, and a nosecone. The instructions show him as both the right arm or the left arm - and he works as both. The animation model shows him as the left arm, but I shot it as the right arm. You can do whatever you like, as long as it's an arm. Given Superion's animation coloring changes depending on the episode, I can't say it's "correct" so much as it is "close enough."
If you want this team, or the combiner robot Superion, Slingshot is essential. I guess you can try to wait for a G2 version, or use Vortex or maybe an Alpha Bravo if we get one. This is the correct figure for the arm, so I think you'll want this one and I assume people will chase this as the rest of the set comes to market. I'd recommend getting it as it's a decent little guy an and of itself, but you absolutely do want it for your super robot purposes. And someone will probably do it better again in 10 years, but this seems to be happening across all brands at all manufacturers. Your "ultimate" Spider-Man or He-Man will be one-upped some day, so you have to make decisions on if you're happy with your old G1 or Combiner Wars toy, or if you want this version. I'd say this one is the best, if that's worth anything to you.
