I had the original version of Constructicon Bonecrusher as a kid. I never much liked the combined Devastator, but the little guys were lots of fun. You could have a bulldozer, and you could mount a rocket launcher on top. You could put a chrome drill in it, or a fist! That was a lot of fun. This new one can't do that. He does have a little black blaster and some elements which will allow him to become part of Devastator later this year, largely modeled on the cartoon. It has a nice heft to it, and much like Voyager-class Scrapper he also is sized like a decent deluxe.
Some assembly is required. A black cube has to be mounted on the robot's back and will serve as a connecting piece for the combined robot. (I needed to apply a lot of force.) His only other accessory is a cartoon black blaster, modeled loosely after his toy green blaster, and it's pretty good. I think people who lack Devastator toys will find this a welcome addition, while people with the Combiner Wars version may not see the improvement.
At a Ritz cracker under 5 1/2-inches tall, as a single robot, he delivers a solid green figure. The colors mostly match the cartoon, although you'll see fare more texture here. It doesn't "read" well as the light color of plastic tends to absorb some of the detail work on the shoulders, and admittedly the proportions are a little dumpy. In the cartoon he's a bit thinner - the added joint pieces to hold his shovel bra in place add some bulk I could do without. The legs are a bit wider and seem stumpier, with superior functionality. He has rocker ankles, plus knees are hidden in his treads. Hasbro gave him 5mm holes under his feet, and also gave him slightly stumpier arms. The first are painted purple - that's good - but the arms don't look as good as the cartoon. The wrists don't rotate, either. I assume most fans will be using this guy as a Devastator arm exclusively, so I assume they will ultimately not have as much of an issue with these shortcomings.
This doesn't mean it's bad - you have limitations at this size, and you can see some nice work being done on the head and torso. The head (molded in green, with black on the back) has a silver face and a red visor. The sculpt looks a lot like the cartoon. I prefer silver to animation cel gray, but Hasbro has bounced all over the place with their interpretation of faces. The scoop has sculpted sticker detail, with some red bits and purple bits around the unpainted green bits. A Decepticon symbol is stamped above the bend, and it looks sharp.
While the limbs are a little stumpy, articulation is sufficient and I'd say it's good enough. (Combiner Wars US releases left out the blasters!) My main gripe are some odd gaps around the fists in robot mode, which I assume means upgrade kits for new fists/forearms will be coming shortly. I don't know that I need mismatched green bits, so I'm going to be happy with this one as it is.
More complex than the original toy, there are more bits that open up, fold, or otherwise are manipulated in new-for-Bonecrusher ways. I consulted the instructions to make a vehicle that looks a lot like the original toy, complete with the canopy that slides back.
You lose a lot of the original toy's charm in vehicle mode. The old shovel covered up a bit more of the front of the vehicle. The accessories fit on the top nicely. The stickers, due to not being in the cartoon, are not present on the cartoon version of the toy. There are no wheels, and no real play features to enjoy. As a vehicle, gets the job done and is appropriately green. It just doesn't offer a lot of "play" in here.
If you're building Devastator, he's essential. If you want a stand-alone Bonecrusher, he's probably the best option Hasbro has made in a while - especially for the $25 Deluxe price. Which I guess I now need to specify, as prices might be shooting up. The stumpy design does a good job of getting most of the expected articulation, and the amount of bulk you get for the price feels about right. He's taller than the other Deluxe-class toys I just happened to have on my desk at the time of the review, and I can't deny the head and chest sculpt look great. Everything else is a bit wider than I'd prefer, but it's sturdy. Things don't pop off. It gets the job done. I wouldn't say I like it more - or less - than the Combiner Wars version, so I'd say get whichever version is cheaper.
