The G2 Dinobot Swoop and G2 Dinobot Sludge set gets you a lot of toy. Thanks to price increases coming courtesy of geopolitics, it's a pretty good deal - normally, a Leader-class toy is $59.99. This set nets you two of them for $109.99, and they're based on unrealized 1990s concepts. If what you want are toys based on the cartoon, these aren't those. But if you're neck-deep in reading the Transformers Wiki, then you probably know what these are and understand why it's so exciting to see a toy concept finally realized 30 years later.
Because there's nothing else like it, I recommend this set. Transformers Generation 2 is a fun detour in the line that aimed to pack in some more play features and wild colors in the line, while also making old characters available for a few more years. This set serves the same purpose, offering fans a second chance to get these guys in new colors. It may not be for everybody, but the people who want it are very excited.

G2 Dinobot Swoop isn't satisfied to be a redeco of Studio Series 86 Dinobot Swoop - he also gets a new face. The original toy was big, good, and pretty easy to transform. This one is also simple, and has the added benefit of a face plate that matches the toy more than the cartoon. Check out that visor! And that weird mouth! It looks like a new character, and that's before you factor in the bright green detailing and blue lower legs. The mold is still tight, and the joints ratchet nicely. The figure has a lot of elements molded in color, but a lot of paint as well. For some reason, it's not very UV-reactive, so don't bother breaking out your black light LED flashlights for this set.
The robot mode is nicely jointed, and the flying reptile/prehistoric not-a-bird/whatever pterosaur has moving wings, toes, jaw, and neck. That's pretty good, most dinosaur toys don't have much movement. You can plug his blasters in his wings, plus he can carry the sword on his back with 5mm sockets. It looks great, but I wasn't really expecting the beak, crest, and head to all be the same green. The red eyes pop nicely, there are a lot of circuit details sculpted all over, and it pretty much delivers on the promise of the concept art.

Sludge is big and dumb, and the toy is bright and orange. It's hard to parse the scan of the artwork I've seen online, so I wasn't quite expecting a mostly-blue chest with a mostly-orange body. It's a lot more Halloween in its persona than I would have anticipated. Hasbro did a great job painting the dinosaur shell "wings" with silver on the insides. I love how it looks, but I would have loved a few more painted details to simulate stickers from the concept art. It's still really good, but I would have liked more detailing in the black portions. He has his blaster, and you can swipe one of Swoop's swords if you want. I handed him the spare Grimlock sword, which looks pretty nice.

It's not quite as wild as a departure from Swoop to Swoop, but orange really does change the feel of this guy - especially as a dinosaur. He has a jointed neck and a mostly silver head this time. The tail is black, and it looks pretty sharp. I forgot how massive the dinosaur mode was, extending nearly a foot long. The silver paint does a great job bringing out the technical details, while the orange just eats it alive. I'm not crazy about the mirror-like gloss on the black, as I always saw the concept art as more of a metallic grey of some sort, or maybe even silver to match the wings. It's hard to tell. Colors lie sometimes. At least the toy does a good job bringing you something that looked like a 1990s industrial accident outside Tucson at the Lisa Frank factory, because that's what we're here to buy right now.
Because this is something I wanted for a while, I recommend it. The molds are good, the colors are unique, and it's the kind of thing I expected would only be made as an overpriced BotCon exclusive. $110 for two big robots in colors that appeal specifically to collectors seems like a steal, but it probably also marks the end (or near end) of dinobots I'm willing to buy from these molds. I've got two of everybody and a all G2 Grimlocks, which is plenty. I might show up for "toy colors Swoop with toy face," though. This duo is really something special and weird, and it's nice to see Hasbro do something really outlandish with some of its mold choices. I assume we'll get reissues of the G1 cartoon deco for some time, but for those who are good on silver/gold/red? Get these.
