Hasbro Transformers Cyberworld Energon Surge Cyber Changers ScourgeI was at a thing last year and got to see some of Cyberworld early, and I was really surprised by what we saw. It's funny how memory works, I would have bet you that this Ultimate Cyber Changers Scourge was twice the size. Admittedly I'd been running to and from meetings all day and it was near the very very large Soundwave tentacle monster, but it was impossible to not have a reaction to Scourge as a pirate. Transformers has had about 20 years of decent pirate characters, like Cannonball and Thundertron and their various crews. Walmart's Thundertron has a peg leg and a hook for a hand, plus a parrot bat buddy. But this Scourge really pulls out all the stops without resorting to hand or leg replacements. At a glance, I was impressed, but now that I have one in hand? Very impressed.

I know some of you are collectors who have some sort of shame or embarrassment about "buying toys," because collector-level items and Masterpieces seem so much more mature. Throw that away, stop doing that. Then go get $22, go to the store, and give this guy a look. It doesn't take forever to transform, and it's just utterly amazing. I would recommend buying this one, and let that color your curiosity on other toys. I want to buy more after trying this guy.

Hasbro Transformers Cyberworld Energon Surge Cyber Changers Scourge

So many toys have come out in recent years that are devoted to trying to to be the ultimate version of something from 40 years ago, with amazing articulation and flat detail to portray an idealized figure that you can pose like the cartoon. Or leave on a shelf, untransformed, forever. Scourge draws very little inspiration from his namesake beyond parts of his face and I guess the notion of some sort of space boat. He's largely his own bot. I was excited about this toy just because 1990s neon colors, with a glow in the dark sword, and a pirate mode seemed like fun. But Hasbro and Takara-Tomy (presumably) had to go in and load it up with tiny little details on nearly every surface, taking the kiddo toy and elevating it into a completely new class of good times for old cranky toy junkies.

Thanks to his hat, Scourge stands a hair under 7-inches tall. He's big, and is just a pile of delights. Scourge's bot beard carries through nicely to Cyberworld without seeming obligatory, adding on a purple hat and a matching eye patch matey. The silver paint really brings out the details incredibly well, and his red eye really feels like something out of an idealized vintage-era Takara toy. The hat lacks any fun detailing like a skull or faction mark, but it's loaded with panel lines on the front and back. Someone really went to town on this, and that's just the head.

The torso is a boat. The big action feature is a spring-loaded bow that opens up sort of like Optimus Prime's chest. Inside is a spooky clear purple skull and crossbones, which is activated by pressing down on a switch near the bottom of the chest. The sides are bursting with energy, and I have got to wonder if an earlier version of this toy had LEDs that were costed out. It doesn't need them, but it feels like something someone was considering before cost increases became a thing in 2025. On top of the chest is part of the deck, but let me get to that later. The limbs have big crisp detailing, not too subtle, with elements of fins to sell the aquatic theme. His fingers are extended, but he retains a functional 5mm "fist" to hold his sword. That's a good call, it gives his hands a little personality while feeling relatively durable.

The limbs and body have a lot of fun bits which are harder to see in boat mode, like a number of gears and wheels on his back, or life preservers on his thighs. You'll want to examine each part because the sculptors put something on nearly every part to reward your eyeballs for investigating more closely.

As a large robot, it's functional but doesn't have the articulation of collector figures. That's why it's not $43 like a Voyager-class toy. The arms have no paint, and only move at the shoulder. The legs bend at the knees, with nicely jointed hips. Articulation is somewhere between a G2 Cyberjet and a typical G1 smaller-size toy. If Hasbro gave him ball-jointed knees or any elbow articulation, I believe they would lose a lot of collectors to the kid line. It's just so colorful and original, fitting in well with the tail-end of the 1980s or early 1990s in terms of color.

And his gear? They were generous. The sail can be a shield, or a sort of arm cannon. The sword is a sword, cast in clear purple and molded with a place for some above-average glow-in-the-dark paint. The purple Energon bursts are nice extras, but I won't lie to you - if Hasbro left them out, I wouldn't miss them. It's neat for a Super (Saiyan?) mode, but it doesn't do much for me in and of itself. It pairs nicely with the pop-open chest energy thing, too.

Hasbro Transformers Cyberworld Energon Surge Cyber Changers Scourge

Transformation is easy - it's pretty much the same as Sky-Byte, or Hound. Swing the arms up. Then it sort of auto-morphs when you push back on his crotch, as we all do. You probably won't need the instructions here, other than to get tips on where the energy bits go. The sail piece mounts in a hole in the center of the ship, and it's real easy to get in there.

It's a pirate ship! While Hound is a perfectly nice truck, Scourge sells the boat thing. True to his namesake, his barely-hidden head pokes through the front of the deck. As you investigate more closely, you can see multiple sizes of "board" making up the deck. There are little stairs leading up to the front, and all sorts of details all over. Sure, there are robot bits - but you'll also find life preservers, cannons, a rail motif on the very back, ladders, chains, and other nautical elements that show someone over there really, really enjoyed making this. The cybernetic sail looks more like metal than cloth, with panels stuck together and it's absolutely slathered in pale green paint. (It doesn't glow.) You can find little booster engines and fins off to the side, and it all makes for a weird-but-great boat. It's an incredibly creative ship that works for 1980s kids (who now have their own kids), or maybe even a generation of fans who might just like the Going Merry.

Is it perfect? No. My main complaint comes from the "scooter mode," where you add on some purple energy parts so another figure can "ride" him on the back. The sail's green paint is so thick, it's difficult (or impossible) to get the parts on without feeling like you're going to scrape something. I would rather they left the 5mm pegs unpainted so nobody has to feel like they're going to break anything. The tolerances are just too, too tight to work with that much paint. It's a great ideal, though, and the flat deck behind it is perfect for your figures to hang out and ride.

The purple accessories all have a place to go, thanks to the boat being covered in 5mm sockets. I appreciate having a way to stow the sword so it isn't lost and becomes a play feature, but if it weren't for the scooter mode I find the energy bits kind of useless. They're OK, I guess, but they get in the way of seeing all the detail on the boat.

While a lot of older toy collectors seem to have problems with the kid stuff, it's worth remembering that most of us are here because of our relationships with our favorite old toys from childhood. This one seems to have worked out a number of issues by bringing back a popular character and making it big, fun, and easy to play with. I was pretty jazzed for the Shockwave toy, but this might be a more impressive execution of its concept. I know money is tight for a lot of us this year, so maybe skip a collector-level toy and give this a shot. If nothing else, you can pretend it's the Generation 2 Scourge we never got!
