MOTU Subscriptions Available Now

Masters of the UniverseHE-MANFor years fans have said they wish they could subscribe to their favorite toy line. Mattel is sort of doing this with their Club Eternia 2010 program, in which for $260 you'll get 12 figures plus a bonus exclusive Wun-Dar, which is essentially the Wonder Bread He-Man from the 1980s. It's not a bad deal, and shipping is extra, but take note: there will be numerous bonus figures and toys not included in the program, so you will not get a complete set of everything if you sign up for this and call it a day.

Glass Eyes
August 4, 2009
Review: Xbox 360 G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

Xbox 360Yep G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is in stores today, and as a passable game based on the toys and movie premise, it basically works.

The good: Reveals the lessons learned from LEGO Star Wars, fun characters, fairly simple gameplay.

The bad: You can't die on the default settings, graphics reek of last-gen models, brings little new to the table, you have to unlock (and rescue) Snake Eyes.

It's not terrible, but it's not particularly innovative either. It's adequate. Read on to see if it's worth buying on sale, or renting, or paying in full for this one.

Special Bonus Feature: Hasbro Answered Some Star Wars Questions

As you may or may not know, Hasbro does a number of Q&A sessions with its brands, and we participated in the Star Wars one. Hasbro's answers will be italicized for your increased comprehension difficulty. (Again: we asked, Hasbro answered, in case there was confusion.)

1. We do so enjoy seeing our figures whenever possible, and often buy multiple extra pilots just to outfit the ships. Now it seems there's no longer a need to do so. Over the years Kenner and Hasbro have generally made vehicles with clear or light grey, but still clear, plastic windows. Since the release of the Darth Vader Sith Starfighter, we've seen a few with virtually opaque canopies, thus negating the need to buy pilot figures. (Other candidates include the 2008 Clone Wars Republic Gunship and the fairly dark recently released Anakin Delta 2 Jedi Starfighter and Magnaguard Droid Fighter.) Is there an aesthetic decision in making the vehicles impossible to see inside, is this an oversight?

A1. The tech of craft in the Star Wars universe does not have to conform to conventional viewpoints, like the viewpoint that all canopies must be clear. The real world is no different - who hasn't seen cars with opaque windows using polarized filters? Yet these are perfectly functional vehicles. For each of the craft you mention, it was just an aesthetic decision on the part of the designer. It makes it harder to appreciate what we may put inside, but could also lead to different choices for display - is the fleet in space, or in a hangar where I can put the pilot in front? Either way is valid, although there is something heroic and chaotic about the pre-battle chaos of the hangar that evokes both the team-oriented yet deeply personal nature of the Star Wars conflict. That's one reason why we have been going after more pilots - both Imperial and Rebels - recenty, because these largely unsung film-based and EU pilots need to have their day in the sun. We can't wait to see the different ways folks will use set pieces like the vehicle from Scramble on Yavin, or even simply the ladder that comes with the Comic-Con Luke Skywalker exclusive.

2. If we recall correctly, there was some mention for the Battle Pack box form being changed in the very near future, thus making it so this next wave of Battle Packs will be very here today, gone tomorrow. Assuming this is true, will any of the final 4 Battle Packs from that wave find homes in the new assortment, or perhaps put into other assortments like the new figure with vehicle assortment 91349? (Naturally, we're awkwardly getting at the big Republic Gunship pod, of which we all want several.)

A2. The same package size will be used for the new red/white battle pack versions, and it will go back to the older, narrow, figure-based footprint for Fall 2010. The Gunship pod is not targeted for re-release in the new red/white line look, but we'll keep an eye on the sell-through to see how it tracks and guage whether there is a chance/need for re-release. We think based on the first release that there should be plenty to go around, but the extent to which folks will be buying deeper multiples of this is the wild card that could drive it to be scarcer. UPDATE From Hasbro - August 12, 2009: It was decided to re-release the Geonosis Assault (Gunship pod) set, so it *will* be coming out in the red/white line look this Fall.

3. We just got the yellow Anakin's Delta 2 Jedi Starfighter, and it's great-- R2-D2 is sitting in the droid socket, and everyone's favorite future psycho is in the pilot's seat. We've had Obi-Wan's for months, and love it-- but there's no astromech droid specifically for Obi-Wan Kenobi just yet. Is one planned? We're all ears when it comes to new cartoon astromech droids.

A3. Great question. With as many cool things as there are to keep track of in Clone Wars, we sort of lost sight of our little mechanical astromech companions in the line planning (other than R2 and goldie, of course). We are indeed looking at getting out more of the cool cartoon astro droids, but we don't have any details yet on who/what/when will be added. We're hoping that we can get some more out - and Obi-Wan's R4 tops the priority list - by late next year.

G.I. Joe: Convention News Round-Up

G.I. JoeG.I. JoeWith the movies being the main focus for the toy line in the next year, Hasbro showed off a number of products going as far as Fall... 2010. Most interesting of all, though, was just how nifty the club offerings were.

  • Panel: Things you have never seen or heard (TheTerrorDrome.com) was packed with vintage tidbits like a train that went unproduced and the original, much larger size for the U.S.S. Flagg. Great stuff.
  • Panel: Movie, Hasbro 2010 (TheTerrorDrome.com)
  • Picture: Mail-in Cobra Commander figure from the movie (TheTerrorDrome.com)
  • Panel: Club/Convention Panel (CobraIsland.com) is incredible. Upcoming club figures include 25th-style Dr. Venom and numerous "Adventure Team" style Joes with vehicles that are so retro-hip you will crap yourself. Club Hydro Vipers based on the original molds may also be coming. Also: news comes in from a friend of ours that most 1980s-era tooling is rusted to the point where it's no longer usable, we may be at an end of the original o-ring Joe era.
  • Joe Con 2010: Providence, RI. In other words, Hasbro's back yard.
  • Goofy: Shadow Tracker (GeneralsJoes.com), new Native American jungle expert, melt down his head to get DNA from which to clone dinosaurs
  • Lots of other stuff: GeneralsJoes.com

Nintendo Wii Downloads This Week

WiiREVENGE!There are two WiiWare games this week. Family Slot Car Racing is $5/500 points, and PictureBook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit is $8/800 points.

Also new: Rock 'N Roll Climber, a climbing game for 800 points. It uses the remote, nunchuck, and balance board-- so the play control sounds more involved than the bulk of games out there.

Virtual Console fans, it's the Sega Genesis title The Revenge of Shinobi for $8/800 points. Not exactly a bargain, but if you like ninjas, and revenge, you could do far worse.

Nintendo DSi Downloads This Week: Brain Rock

Nintendo DSGuitar Rock TourGot a DSi? There's Guitar Rock Tour, for $5/500 points. Nintendo says: "If you like rock music and have a sense of rhythm, your road to stardom starts here!" We think they may be in error.

Also new is Brain Age Express: Sudoku for $5/500 points. Do we need to explain this? Well, we aren't going to.

Shadow Complex for the Xbox 360 Released

Xbox Live ArcadeShadow ComplexA new $15/1,200 point Metroid clone is here, minus the awesome character designs. Buzz has it that Shadow Complex is an above-par, 2.5D adventure that cribs many of Super Metroid's finer points, but little of its personality. Give the demo a whirl if you've got an Xbox 360.

URGH! A Music War Hits DVD, Much Later Than Expected

DVDA Classic?Buzz had it that for years, the documentary URGH! A Music War was kept off home video of any kind, and was heavily edited on cable, due to some music rights issues. The nearly 30-year-old film is essentially a big concert movie, with numerous late '70s and early '80s acts like Devo, The Police, Wall of Voodoo, Oingo Boingo, Dead Kennedys, Echo & the Bunnymen, Klaus Nomi, Skafish, X, and a bunch of others you either totally freaking love or have never heard of. The 2-hour movie is on Warner's "Archive Collection" service, which means they make it on-demand. We assume the quality is OK, it's $19.99. We've had the soundtrack in our possession for years and it's excellent.

PS3: PSN Updates This Week

PS3Andy Dick in PainThe oddest news this week is that Andy Dick is now a playable character (via DLC) in PAIN! No, we don't know why. But it's $1.99. If this works out, may we suggest Doug Benson DLC in Street Fighter IV or perhaps Dana Gould in Soulcalibur IV?

The new full game this week is Smash Cars for $14.99. We're not sure what it is from the title. Presumably, Sudoku.

Your PSOne rerelease: Bloody Roar at $5.99.
