Hasbro Transformers Legacy Deluxe Prime Universe Knock-Out Action FigureI got Prime Universe Knock-Out during a bit of a glut, and the Elita-1 from this wave had some assembly problems that stopped me from opening the rest until late 2023. Seriously, they sat for over a year, that's how non-plussed I was with Elita. And it's not entirely unfair - this guy had a problem on my sample that marred transformation a bit, but is otherwise a perfectly nice car toy. It's almost like this mold's retools are cursed.

For the 2022 line, Hasbro G1-ified these guys pretty well by giving them such additions as noses and chunkier builds. The pretty streamlined Prime toy is now built on the Studio Series 86 Jazz [FOTD #2,299] chassis - a good mold - with a lot of new parts. There's a whole new car shell, for example, which updates the robot significantly and easily, with a new head and new accessories. It's not an obvious retool, and those are always welcome. It's also a little loose and weird, and the tabs kept pieces from joining together even with Brute Force and scraped some skin off my hands until I scraped a nub off a tab. It shouldn't be this way.

It's not your old Knock-Out, at all. You can see that much of him recycles Jazz parts, but he gets new feet, a new chest, new forearms, and most importantly, a new head. The basic forms of Knock-Out's noggin are present, with the red crests and silver face. Noses (or lack thereof) are so distinctive that its addition makes it seem like an entirely new character, which makes no nevermind to me as I didn't get very far into the Prime cartoon. Articulation and general build is more or less identical to Jazz, warts and all. He stands fine, although his shoulders are a tiny bit loose in spots.

Adapting one of the classic car-chest-boobs car designs to a new character with a different design may not be the most creative way to go, but it works. Granted, the Prime design was seen walking around G1 comics and nobody batted an eye, so this was probably a change more due to budgeting and matching toy aesthetics than a real reinvention. It's a clever reuse of some very specific tooling, and cost-cutting is something you need to do if you want to keep your toy job these days. Other than some slightly loose limbs, I'd say this is a good robot figure or at least good enough for what it aspires to be, althugh I wish his fists were slightly more forgiving of the pegs on his accessory. It's a tight, tight grip.

Transformation is maddening - getting the car trunk area merged together stressed the tab and tore skin of my hands. Other than that, it's a lot like Jazz and would otherwise not be unpleasant.

The car looks a lot like the Hasbro Transformers Prime toy. It lacks the maroon elements, but it has some familiar 5mm ports around where the gas tank would be, some similar-but-different hood modifications, and the silver graphics on the side. The Legacy version actually adds new elements, like yellow wheel covers - your price increase dollars at work, folk. There are also some nice silver and black elements on the front of the car, although the back was left unpainted. I wonder if that was intentional, or costed out - some maroon remains above the rear wheels, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if this pretty good car got simplified to meet budgeting demands. It still looks nice, and if it were a wholly original design you'd probably say "It looks kind of like Dead End but it's really cool!"

I don't know that I saw this in stores much - or at all - but he's selling for less than retail just over a year after his release, so you might want to get him if you missed him. I don't think Prime adherents will be especially pleased with the changes made to the design, but if you just want another Decepticon on your G1 shelves he looks pretty awesome. It won't replace your old toys of him, and the slightly-loose joints probably means mine is destined to hang out on a shelf and not get a lot of play for a while.
