Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Rhino - Flesh Action FiguresHey, it's a classic! I got the Rhino - Flesh a couple of years ago, and basically shot it and had him ready to review - I like to keep a few figures around for a while so I can look back on them and see how they turned out after a few years. Rise of the Beasts was a Kickstarter project that got funded, but due to some factory issues was pulled at the last possible minute - and later released, sans Kickstarter. Later, a second series went to Kickstarter - this did not get supported. In this time a grand total of 20 PVC figures were released, each of which had 4 points of articulation and was based on one of two sculpts. As is popular, they were eventually run in "flesh" plastic like the popular vintage M.U.S.C.L.E. line, which to this day remains one of the gold standards for collectible minifigures.

I haven't looked at this figure in a while, and I have to say he's aged well. The hands are the right size to hold The Outer Space Men accessories and some other LEGO and Transformers weapons, plus he has no real problems standing upright. With his exaggerated - but not super-deformed - look, he's got big thighs and armored limbs, which makes him seem like a smaller cousin to the recently released (and I still need to pick one up) Battle Tribes figures. Each arm has a blaster, and the chest sports a little square similar to the vintage Battle Beasts rubsigns.

The armor itself is nicely plated, and you'll notice a few rivets here and there. The feet are basically bland, not being particularly hoof-like or shoe-like. It's a simple shape that works - much like the first series of Battle Beasts had c-shaped, fingerless hands - something the Rhino also sports. At about 60mm tall, he's in line with many "army man" figures and stands a bit taller than your other flesh-colored collectible non-articulated releases.

What's funny is he was released only two years ago - it feels like an eternity. Much of the line has since sold out, but these guys (and 4 of the painted dudes) are still up for grabs in the Little Rubber Guys Store along with some other worthwhile miniature figures. According to the forums and the line's creator Jon Karis, the line isn't officially dead yet - after all, the first series did take some time to make it out - so there's still hope more figures may some day follow. If he's reading, I'm really hoping he can crank out a pair of glow-in-the-dark figures, as is largely the obligation of anyone making a Glyos-compatible toy these days.
