Even more Gormiti! The Clear Ancient Jellyfish comes with the Florus the Poisoner, and they seem to be based on an octopus/jellyfish hybrid and an flower mutant, respectively. For those of you just joining us, Gormiti sort of combine Battle Beasts and MUSCLE elements, and are little plastic guys who can fight with a trading card game. When I got this-- on clearance, deeply discounted even more by a closing retail store-- all the "Series 1" packs included one normally painted figure and one "variant," generally cast in a translucent color. The Sea Tribe were given clear blue plastic with blue and neon orange painted highlights.
The Clear Ancient Jellyfish wasn't the reason I bought the set, as I had the painted one. I can't deny it's neat though-- the safety orange color looks toxic, with icy clear blue plastic for the body and orange highlights on the body. Unlike the regular release, it has painted orange suction cups and bumps on her arms for a really striking appearance. It still has no articulation to speak of, nor does her partner, but the coloring looks delightfully strange and the figure measures about 1 1/2-inches tall.
I have read (but have not personally confirmed) the "Atomic" clear variants of the Sea Tribe in the US release of series 2 actually change color in cold water.
Just barely shorter is the painted version of Florus the Poisoner, a plant mutant cast in brown plastic with dark brown feet plus green and yellow highlights. A flower head and flower hands are not particularly threatening, but the body is an interesting mix of bark and vines with some twigs mixed in for good measure. I get that he's deadly and poisonous from his trading card, but bright yellow is a tough color to take seriously on a vicious monster. I understand why they went with it, you have to make these toys colorful for the kids and such, but it is a little silly. And that's why I went for it-- the Forest Tribe is the neatest one after the Sea Tribe if you ask me, so grab either of these guys if you can. Again, he has no articulation, but looks good standing there. There's also a clear variant of this one.
I got this set for a buck and felt as if I got my money's worth. I have no real use for the cards beyond identifying the characters, and each figure feels like a decent capsule toy-- at a buck or two per figure, I think they're a decent deal. At the original asking price of $6 per 2-pack, I actually ignored them. I literally had no idea what they were or what they did until I stumbled on them on the clearance aisle in 2011. Pricing can make a big difference! Of course, if the figures had jointed arms and a removable weapon, I'd gladly have shelled out more than six bucks a set.
