This Secret Agent figure is actually identical to the standard release, but was also given away in the Toy Fair exclusive packaging as seen below. It's a simple envelope that pops open, so you can open it and replace it without anyone really knowing it was opened-- there is no tape and no baggie here.
The figure is, as always, a standard Playmobil buck with some new enhancements in deco. Some great face paint was added, and a highly detailed spy outfit (although not at all subtle) makes this more of an action figure than a traditional Playmobil toy. Added elements give the figure a little more weight, and the accessories more or less qualify as some form of action feature. There are no firing rockets, but you can use the grappling hook to hang from things, or the suction cups provide limited ability to hang around on a window. (These things are rarely perfect.)
This feels like it would be a lot of fun for a young toy owner, but as a guy who collects Playmobil I can pretty much only take it as a neat, legit kid's toy. A lot of what makes Playmobil fun for me is its bizarre, realistic, sometimes unusual way of viewing the world. It's a line for kids that looks like a child's drawing, while this figure feels more like a kid's toy through the lens of a marketing department. I don't know that this is what a spy would look like to a kid, but not being six I don't know. The entire line is packed with James Bond-esque hardware and not-so-subtle spy figures, so it could be a real win for Playmobil if it takes off as an action figure line rather than a developmental/gradeschooler one.
While not widely available in the US yet, it will be, in its normal packaging. I wouldn't jump on this one, but I'm all about the robots, hobos, and pirates so what do I know?
