BanDai's Tamagoras figure toys are somewhat infamous in the USA. The best-known release of them were as licensed repaints-- you might remember Masters of the Universe and its "Meteorbs" segment. Those were repaints of the original BanDai Tamagoras, which have seen numerous knock-offs and rereleases, some of the most recent of which came from a company called Hog Wild a few years ago. This Get Back To Job Lion is a completely new sculpt when compared to the original lion from the 1980s. It has a smoother, more egg-like surface and, obviously, is black with designs closer to that of designer toys.
Why should you buy this figure? Well, do you think it's cute or funny? That's why. The figure has articulated legs and a tail, and comes (seemingly) blind-packed. I bought this toy sealed on eBay, but the seller assured me correctly that it was indeed the model I wanted. Other flavors include "What's Up?" in blue or "Lion" in red, as well as three more realistic, less arty versions.
This isn't a toy for the playing so much as it is for the displaying. Your kids might find this fun or funny, but really, this is a desk toy. You keep this around to amuse co-workers in a cube or office. It's cute, and its simple transformation will keep you busy while smiling and nodding while your boss or mom prattles on about whatever on the phone while what you're really thinking is "what should we do for lunch today?" Yup, that's exactly the kind of figure this is.
Other recent Tamagoras from BanDai include a bear and a squirrel with multiple zany repaints.
